Stuffed animals

February 25th, 2010

When looking for something to gift a child we automatically reach for a stuffed toy. Stuffed animals are our favorite. We like them soft, cuddly and big! Since we will continue to do this, we might as well know what to look for in stuffed animals. For one, we should stop buying huge animal toys for little kids. First, it is dangerous for kids to play with them. If the kid attempts to carry the toy, she might topple down and get hurt. Second, it occupies such a huge space in the crib or bed.

We should also teach ourselves not to choose merely based on cuteness or cushiness. We should start looking into the material used. Cloth and plush are popular choices although other materials are also being used. Ask about the quality of the material used including the filling. Go for organic materials. They might be a bit more expensive but it will be a good investment in the health of your child.

Children love to have animal toys around them. They become their friends and sometimes they even talk to them. Making a stuffed animal can be great fun especially when you have your children to help you. You can make one by following these simple steps:

~Pick out the fabric that you like.
~Draw a sketch with a light colored marker of the animal that you like. You can also download a pattern from the internet.
~Cut out two figures.
~Sew the two figures together. Make sure to leave a hole so you can put in your stuffing.
~Turn the animal inside out.
~Stuff the animal with your batting material.
~Sew the hole closed.
~Add whatever details you desire – tails, ears, mouth, and nose.
~Encourage your child to give it a name.

skater bud

February 16th, 2010

Living in New York City can be very exciting. It can also be very tiring and expensive. If you live in New York, you often have to walk a lot. If you don’t like to walk, you can always take the subway or the bus. When I lived in the city for two years, I got my son a skater bud so he wouldn’t complain about all the walking we had to do.

A skater bud is a set of wheels which you can attach to a child’s sneakers. This is sort of a cross between the roller skates back in the 70s and the roller blades of the 90s. Roller skates were bulky and heavy; they were strapped on the bottom of sneakers. Rollerblades are shoes that have blades with tiny wheels in them. With roller skates you can stand straight and not tip over, standing on roller blades is like standing on ice skates.

Wood toys

February 2nd, 2010

The beauty about these toys is that you can make them yourself, if you choose to. Wood toys are relatively easy to make. No major woodworking skills are required. With patterns are available for the picking. You can progress from a simple toy wagon to the more complicated rocking horse. What joy to be able to present your little one with his own homemade wooden toy.

A miniature doll house will be a fun project for your daughter or granddaughter. The first step in this project, as in any project you will undertake, is to lay down a plan on paper. You can use good old – fashioned pencil and paper, or, you can use a computer program to plan out your miniature doll house. Gather your supplies and start executing your plan. I’m sure, as you are finishing your project, your little girl will have some things on her mind about furnishing her new wooden dollhouse.

Childrens educational toys

February 1st, 2010

In a child’s world, it is always about play…play and more play. Play is the most important activity of any child. If we want to impart more serious matters into their little brains it will sink in faster through play. An educational toy is one that helps a child learn something good, something that will help in the future. Childrens educational toys make learning thru play a reality.

When children play they are challenged to learn new and progressively more complicated things. Educational toys are great in helping children grow by leaps and bounds. They inspire children to learn more and provide them confidence that they are capable of learning more. Toys are an indispensable part of growing up. Choosing the right toys will help the child develop his imagination, understand more about different objects and learn how to correlate ideas and come up with his own creative thoughts.
