tag reading system

June 15th, 2009

I have a two year old son and everyday I read to him books that usually involve stories of animals. I try to make my own sound effects to keep him interested. I have tried looking for interactive toys in the store but I found them to be quite expensive. I also do not want to spend so much on a toy that I know my son will wreck in a few weeks. Last month, a colleague of mine told me about the tag reading system. I had no idea what it was at first but she showed me and explained to me how they worked. I was so impressed that I bought one for my son the next day.

The tag reading system is simply amazing! A tag reader involves a collection of books that come with a big yet handy plastic pen. The child reads the book together with the pen. As soon as the child puts the pen’s tip to a point in the book, sounds and other effects can be heard. In effect the book suddenly comes to life. Reading is now an interactive experience for the child; he hears how words are pronounced and how which sounds go with, which photo or words.

June 15th, 2009

Apart from the Christmas holidays, everyone looks forward to summer with much anticipation. It is the time when most festivities are held and also the occasion when most families enjoy their favorite outdoor activities. Most spend summer frolicking on the beach, trekking, flying RC planes, touring places, or engaging in craft hobbies. Ultimately it’s the time of relaxation for most of us. For young children it is their freedom days from schoolwork.

However, business-minded people view summer as an opportunity to have a lemonade stand! Then for teens that are saving up for sneakers or gadgets, it is the time to earn some big bucks. Thus, some teens are flipping burgers in the nearest fast food chain or arranging products in supermarket shelves at this time.

skateboard bearings

June 12th, 2009

Skateboarders are often on the street perfecting every skateboarding trick they can do. With the street as their natural habitat, the notoriety of being a bum or a slacker is usually associated with skater boys. No wonder most parents dislike the idea of their daughter seeing or dating a skater boy. However the skateboarding landscape has changed over the years. This recreational activity is now categorized as an extreme sport and is now part of sports competitions.

Besides the typical 13 year old skater boys tinkering skateboard bearings this sport has bred professional skaters earning worldwide respect and big money. Normally, professional skaters are featured in sports magazines and get huge pay checks from sponsors and product endorsements. While some of them are seen in television shows and movies for cameo roles. Among renowned names in this sport include Rodney Mullen, Steve Caballero, Andy Macdonald, Tony Hawk, Jean Postec, and Ryan Sheckler who is 20 years old and currently the youngest professional skater.

kayak model

June 12th, 2009

I’ve always dreamed of going to see the artic ever since I saw the movie “Tomb Raider”. From what I have seen on television, the artic is so beautiful! I went on an artic holiday and got to see icebergs and whales. I became fascinated by the Eskimo. I decided to go to the local museum to learn more about their heritage. In the museum I saw an Eskimo kayak model. The Eskimo kayaks are basically small boats with covered decks.

The Eskimos used the kayaks for hunting seals and walruses. They even sometimes hunt for reindeers with them. That made me sad with visions of Rudolph being attacked gave me the creeps. Apparently, the Eskimos would attach harpoons to their kayaks. Nowadays, they prefer rifles instead of harpoons. After my museum tour, I went to the gift shop and got an Eskimo kayak model for myself as a souvenir.

All children are familiar with these games which use counters or pieces moved across a board to come to an objective. Board games come in many different forms and can represent nearly any subject. It can be very basic and easy such as checkers which any child can play. It can also be as sophisticated as chess, which requires heavy thinking and strategy. A board game may be played for entertainment or for competition.

wooden outdoor play structures

June 11th, 2009

I started going to school when I was five. It was a big school with a big playground. Among the numerous toys there, the wooden outdoors play structures were my favorite. They seemed so much fun and safe. I hit my head once by accident on the side and it did not hurt that much. I would play for hours on end. My classmates and I would come to school early just to play in those structures. It held some of my fondest memories as a kid.

I loved it when toys and play structures are made of wood. It looks so elegant and classic. It also emanates friendliness as compare to a cold metal. I love the feel of the wood even now. Playing in the wooden outdoor play structures when I was a kid really made me appreciate the beauty of wood as an adult. Unfortunately, nowadays most of the outdoor play structures I have seen are made of plastic. They are not so environmentally friendly but I assume they cost much less than wood.

folding mountain bike

June 5th, 2009

One thing that I would love to have is a folding mountain bike. Because it is foldable, storing it at the trunk of my car won’t be a problem. It can be so compact it’s ideal to bring along in camping trips too. This way I can spare myself from all those long walks.

My other consideration is that my travel time to and from work takes me about an hour. I drive around in an old car and because it’s so old, it sometimes conks out. One time I had to walk about 3 to 4 miles just to get to the nearest gas station. That’s why I opted buying a folding mountain bike. Having a mountain bike at the back of my car would spare me the hassle of having to look for a ride whenever my car breaks down.

kids bikes

June 1st, 2009

Encourage your children to be more active. Regulate their time on the gaming console and ask them to find more activities outside instead. Buy them kids bikes that they can ride around the neighborhood. Biking is good exercise that will develop their muscles as well as their body coordination.

Don’t forget to outfit your children with safety gear such as helmets, knee pads and elbow pads. Orient them too about safety measures they should pay attention to while out in the street. If possible, accompany them on their rounds on your own bike. You’ll get to exercise and keep fit as well.

dollhouses

June 1st, 2009

Almost every other girl loves to play with dolls. When I was growing up I enjoyed playing with dolls. I only had one but I loved it so much. I wanted my mom to buy me more dolls and dollhouses so I could play with them all day. So every birthday, my mom would give me a new doll to add to my collection. By the time I became a teenager, I had about five of 18 dolls.

I have a daughter now who’s almost two. She loves dolls just as much as I did. Fortunately for her, there are thousands of dolls to choose from and hundreds of accessories that come with them. For each character doll that’s introduced in the market, there are almost always several accessories that come with it. There are dollhouses, cars, hair care and clothes that come with every new character doll.
