There is a debate about whether assembling a jigsaw puzzle is a skill, a sport or a craft. I guess it all depends on how the person looks at it. Some are challenged to finish assembling it under a specified time limit which makes it a skill. Others just relish slowly adding to the picture and enjoying how it grows and presents a bigger image. We can say that these people just use jigsaw puzzles for entertainment and as a hobby.

Definitely, jigsaw puzzles do entertain. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned puzzle solver the entertainment factor should never be removed from the picture. There are different kinds of puzzles that range from cardboard pieces that come in thousands of pieces. Wooden jigsaw puzzles are usually less in terms of numbers of pieces because wood is heavy. These are ideal for use in children education toys.

One good thing about this type of puzzle is that it lasts longer compared to the ones made of paper or hard card boards.

Puzzles are fun and educational toys children can spend time on during rainy afternoons. But before buying puzzles for your child, take into consideration their ages and abilities. A toddler, for instance, will not be able to put together a 1000 piece puzzle no matter how pretty the finished product would be. The same way, a bigger kid will find puzzles with very few pieces already boring.

These toys are so unassuming. They look very simple, just pieces of wood, but wooden puzzles can be frustratingly difficult to solve. Take for example the Locking Cube. Made of 7 separate pieces that are intricately cut, they look like a simple cube when assembled. Getting it apart is only half the battle. What more putting them together again.

Maybe you’d rather try the relatively simple “CCO” puzzle. It is a 3-piece wooden puzzle that got its name from the pieces that make up the assembly. The pieces resemble the letters “C”, “C” and “O.” This puzzle has a relatively easy solution which makes it perfect for beginners. It makes a nice looking decorative piece, too.

Jigsaw puzzles

July 9th, 2009

To us puzzles are just games to pass the time away. They satisfy an innate desire to accomplish something. Jigsaw puzzles are challenging because of the myriad pieces that need to be pieced together to complete a picture. The harder the puzzle the better satisfaction we get when it is completely done. It can also be very frustrating when cannot find the perfect location for an itinerant piece.

To scientists, jigsaw puzzles are tools that help the mental state of some patients. They say that successfully piecing a puzzle together, even just placing one piece successfully, encourages the production of dopamine, a brain chemical that improves learning and memory. Jigsaw puzzles create literal connections between the right and left brain, as well as individual brain cells, which increases the ability to learn. That is the scientific explanation of why Sudoku and Christian puzzles exercise the brain.

I love games that work your minds. When I was in high school, I was addicted to crossword puzzles. After a couple of years of crosswords, I tried the Rubik’s cube and Sudoku. Now, I’m into wood puzzles. I think all the puzzles I’m doing has kept my mind sharp. I can calculate faster now than when I was in high school or college.

The only downside about brain teaser puzzles is that they are very addictive. Sometimes, I sleep in the wee hours of the night because I still finishing one. I love wood puzzles now because after you’re done solving them you can put it on your mantle and display it. It looks so cool. My collection of wood puzzles right now stands at 17 pieces.

625 piece puzzles

June 15th, 2009

One of the best ways to pass the time is to play jigsaw puzzles. It can be a solitary game for individual enjoyment or a fun activity for the whole family or with friends. In one of our blissful meetings, my friends and I decided to complete 625 piece puzzles. It took us a day and a half to finish because we worked on a puzzle that has small pieces that are double sided. It was quite challenging as we’re not 100% sure if we’re fitting it on the correct side.

We have to constantly check the picture to see if we’re on the right track. After grueling hours in completing it, we joked to have it framed since it took us a long time to finish. Obviously, putting our heads together made the task easier. Since we are 5 in the group, everyone contributed and enjoyed the fun. A new jigsaw puzzle that will make us scratch our heads again is still welcome though.

educational puzzles

Have video games totally taken over? It seems that every household with kids all seem to have some sort of DVD or computer game attached to the TV. I grew up under the watchful eyes of my mother who forbade us to watch any television during school nights. We were only allowed to watch TV on weekends. As a result, my siblings and I developed a love for reading. Now that my son is a year old, my husband and I have decided to give him books and educational puzzles instead of toys.

My husband being a crossword puzzle addict himself is a believer in educational puzzles. We’ve both seen firsthand how addictive portable video games can be to kids. I began by giving my son, a wooden puzzle on animals. He also was given a puzzle on body parts and another one on colors and numbers. The last one is his favorite, he loves matching the three cats with the 4 dogs. We hope that when our son grows up, he will also develop a love for reading and learning.
