Different Kinds of Puppets

Puppets have always had a special appeal to children. There are different kinds that children will love to play with, depending on their age. Common hand puppets are controlled by the hand which is inserted in the body and oftentimes controls the mouth. Rod puppets require one of the puppeteer’s hands inside the puppet holding a rod which controls the head. Finger puppets are used only on a finger.

The art of puppetry has developed over the years involving certain enhancements. Ventriloquist puppets, for example, bring the puppet to life by ventriloquists who throw their voice to make it sound like the puppet is actually talking. Obviously, this cannot be performed by children but they enjoy watching adult puppeteers tell stories with the puppet as props. Different kinds of puppets cater to different ages. Very young children will probably be able to manage only finger puppets. Older children will be able to manipulate regular hand puppets. Rod puppets are better left for older children and adults.

I work in a preschool. Part of my job is to build the skills of the children and work on their creativity. There are ways to do that from drawing to role play. My favorite way to do it is by using a hand puppet. It is fun and it gets the job done.

A hand puppet is a great way to find out what a child is thinking. It is actually used in children therapy sessions. Everybody knows about the short attention span of children. In order for them to learn, you should be able to grab their attention for long periods. Hand puppets will do this. That’s why most children shows have them.

To make our kids love playing with the toys we gave them, sometimes we have to play with them. It makes it more special when we help them finish the princess jigsaw puzzles or when we read children’s books with them. The parent’s involvement with everything that happens to our child is very much needed especially in their formative years. This is the year where they learn how to communicate with others. It is also the time where they learn how to express themselves.

Aside from role playing, one good way to help them express themselves is through puppet theater. This will inspire their creativity and broaden their imagination. It will also force them to study lines and help them learn the power of concentration. Being responsible is also one of the things that will knock on their consciousness. Through activities like this, they will be exposed to a lot of things that will help them handle what the real world will dish out to them.

Aside from their birthday, all children look forward to Christmas with glee. The anticipation and excitement to this day can be accounted to the numerous presents that children expect to receive. Consequently most retail establishments are abounding with toys that range from the classic handguns to digital toys. Since most parents tag along their children on Christmas shopping spree, rearranging of interior designs in malls are normally done.

Usually window displays and additional features inside the malls are re-designed for the comfort of shoppers and children. Some department stores install interactive toys like bubble maker, mini-train tracks, kids puppet stage, and colorful blocks. Santa Claus sitting in a corner for photo opportunities is likely to be found too. And to add more to the festive ambience, kiosks of balloon maker, candies, finger foods, trinkets, are also present. Children are indeed having a grand time enjoying these additional conveniences while mothers are engrossed in their shopping.

Entertain your child’s guests on his next birthday party. Put up a puppet theater and ask some of your fellow parents to join you. Put up a show that the little ones will not forget for a long time. There are lots of stories on CDs that you can simply follow. Choose those with lots of songs that the children are already familiar with. It would be easier to encourage them to sing along.

Exaggerate puppet movements and do some funny stunts to make the experience more entertaining. Prepare more than one story though. If your first becomes such a hit, chances are, your young audience will be clamoring for more.
