F-15 model airplane

January 21st, 2009

I practically grew up beside a military air base and each day, I woke up to the zooming sounds of airplanes flying by. I would watch as pilots did their training exercises and imagined myself flying one of those jets. When it was time to apply though, I found out that I missed the height requirement by a few inches.

For a time after that experience I took living life beside an air base for granted until we moved to another place. Whenever I would visit a museum or a toy store and see an F-15 model airplane, nostalgia would engulf my being and I’d go back to memories of my youth again. It seems like it’s never left me.

Normandie model ship

January 21st, 2009

The SS Normandie would have a lot of adjectives of superlatives attached to its name when she was first built. She had power and speed, but she would not have the commercial success she was tipped to have. She was originally French but the Americans captured her and renamed her Lafayette during World War II.

Despite this her beauty as a ship is undeniable. For collectors, a Normandie model ship would embody the ambitious start for her voyage–she was the biggest ship of her time, and the biggest bottle of champagne was used at her christening to underline the fact. It also tells of her unfortunate end, when she was damaged by fire and turned to scrap despite efforts to restore her.

A hobby can be anything that makes constructive use of your spare time. Examples of engaging hobbies are cross-stitch sewing, knitting, photography, or painting.

Hobbyists can also start a collection of anything that strikes their fancy. These can be something as mundane as a keychain collection, a sticker and stationery collection, a Barbie doll collection, or even a collection of model airplanes. There are those who collect first-editions of books or comic books. Enthusiastic collectors go to many lengths to acquire new pieces for their hobby. Some rare items cost thousands of dollars, but to a true collector, this item can really be worth it.

HMS victory model

December 17th, 2008

I was on a cruise recently, and that was when I became fascinated with big ships. As a retired postal service employee, I have nothing on my hands but time anyway. So I started collecting model ships. These are intriguing and really make a worthwhile pastime. Beats gardening any day, I’d say.

So what’s an oldtimer like me doing with a bunch of old ships? I create battles! Now I am a hit with the neighborhood kids, who all want to see my collection, this is a great way to teach kids history, by the way. Strategizing is also one of the lessons they will pick up on the way. I have a kid who has memorized most of the specs of the ships I have. Our favorite one is the HMS victory model, because it is just a massive piece of history.

WWI model planes

December 5th, 2008

Be among the few people who choose to specialize in era model plane collections. WWI model planes are among the rarest models. They are very hard to make because of their intricate and delicate structures. Manufacturers of such models need to do intensive historical research on these models for them to be as accurately built. Collectors are advised to have these in closed glass storage spaces to prevent damage.

Among the popular collectors items are the Havilland Tiger Moth, Albatross, Neiuport 28 and Fokker DR 1. These are the fighting planes that were developed in the early 1900s for specific purposes. Most collectors are motivated to collect them because of their significance and interesting historical background. Hard to find model planes tend to have higher tag prices though. And that makes them even more enticing for collectors.

model sailboats

December 2nd, 2008

There is one scene in the Stuart Little movie that is truly thrilling. It is the part when they go to Central Park to join a sailboat contest. They all wanted to win first prize.

Stuart, his big brother, and their dad worked together to finish one of the most magnificent boats in the lot. When the model sailboats took off, Stuart was in the lead, but a rival was cheating and destroyed most of the model boats in the fleet. It took Stuart’s determination to steer his damaged boat towards the finish line.

hand painted model airplanes

My brother is an avid collector of model planes. He and his buddies always meet up and compare notes. Sometimes they even swap models. His favorites are those hand painted model airplanes. He says nothing beats the way these models were handcrafted and designed.

Some models, due to their rarity, can be so pricey but, for a collector like him, these models are still worth every penny.

diecast hearse

October 23rd, 2008

A hearse is a funeral vehicle that is used to bring the coffin from the church to the cemetery. Despite being associated with burials, there have been a number of hearse enthusiasts who admire the classic hearse cars. Others even collect diecast hearse models.

The most popular of these hearses would probably be the 1959 Cadillac Miller Meteor hearse. In the United States, the Cadillacs and the Lincolns are the known hearses used.
